Every job that comes through the door starts with the same decision: repair the panel, or replace it. Getting that call right is most of the craft, and getting it wrong in either direction costs the customer money.

Repair or replace

A shallow dent in an accessible area of a steel panel with intact paint is usually cheaper and better to repair. Metal has memory, and worked correctly it goes back where it started. Replace instead and you are paying for a part, a full refinish, and the risk of a color mismatch on a vehicle that had none.

The opposite is also true. Stretched metal, damage crossing a body line, a panel with corrosion already working under the edge, or anything on a modern high-strength steel structure the manufacturer says may not be repaired: those get replaced, and pushing filler over them just delays the real bill.

Rocker panels and the Michigan problem

Road treatment in this state is brutal on rockers, lower quarters, and cab corners. Salt gets into a seam, works outward from the inside, and by the time it shows on the surface the metal underneath is gone. We cut back to sound material and weld in new sections rather than skimming over soft steel, because the second approach looks fine for one season and then blisters.

What certification changes

Our technicians hold I-CAR and ASE credentials, and the shop is PPG certified on the refinish side. On paper that is a training record. In the bay it means someone knows which steels can take heat, which cannot, and where the automaker permits a section.
